In the Mastery-Leadership curriculum at Warrior Concepts, there is a series of questions built into each level that students are responsible for. These questions range from historical details to those related to the science that lies behind the arts we study.
One such question posed to students approaching the Shodan, or 1st degree Black Belt level is...
"What skill was the Ninja best known for?"
While the public at-large, including martial artists of all styles, assume the answer to somehow be related to stealth, the use of weapons, or even assassination, the real answer couldn't be further from the truth. And, yet, despite the fact that the Ninja became part of the first organized police forces in Japanese history, aided by this most powerful skill, the truth still eludes most people, Japanese included, today.
Find out what it's like to train, eat, sleep, and breath the art of Ninjutsu, the "art of the Ninja," at this year's Fall Ninja Camp 2006. From Friday, November 3rd through Sunday, November 5th, you'll be able to train with some of the best Ninja teachers and senior students of the art. What's it like to train at a real Ninja Camp? Here's the link to find out...
So, what was the primary skill of a Ninja?
What were these shadowy figures, feared by most and held in awe by many, best known and sought after for?
Any ideas?
Would you believe...
"Information Gathering." The ability to collect and translate information. Plain and simple.
Not using the sword.
Not unarmed fighting.
Not the use of throwing stars and other exotic weapons.
While it is true that they were known to be experts at all of these things...
...the Ninja, first and foremost, was sought out for his or her ability to get information about what was going on in the world of their day. And... the ability to translate that information so that they and others could produce results with the least amount of wear and tear.
